A NATIONWIDE search to find the Alpha Feeds Star Performer of the Year led to an outstanding winner in Bessie, owned by Marie Matthews.
The award was launched to help recognise the many dogs that are stars in their owner’s eyes and the judges were unanimous when they read Marie and Bessie’s story.
Based in Sheffield, Marie and Bessie have formed a real bond, with the little dog helping Marie to cope with her health problems.
Bessie is an 11-year-old, R.S.P.C.A rescue dog who Marie has owned since she was only eight-weeks-old. Marie refers to Bessie as just your ordinary dog, not especially talented but her best friend, something most dog owners can relate to.
However, this is where most similarities end. Bessie was crowned the Alpha Feeds Star Performer of the Year for the help and support she gives Marie who has M.E. and other health problems which cause Marie pain, fatigue and further symptoms which can make her days difficult to get through.
With the constant support of Bessie, Marie has been able to smile and enjoy her time with her best friend. She has experienced negative reactions to her health problems, and Marie credits Bessie for helping her to carry on and giving her a reason to get up in the morning as Bessie takes her as she is.
Says Marie: “Bessie is all I need in a friend, I can tell her anything and she looks at me like she understands what I am talking about. She is also as mad as a hatter, always digging holes and making me laugh.
“I couldn’t believe it when I heard Bessie had won it was the best news and she really is a Star Performer. I really do rely on Bessie to help brighten my day she really is a worthy winner, I just love her.”
Bessie received the Alpha Feeds Performer of the Year Trophy, a year’s supply of Alpha Feeds dog, lead and towel, while Marie received an Alpha Feeds fleece.
A delighted Marie and Bessie with their prizes.
